Understandably, an accounting degree usually translates to being an Accountant or an Auditor, but it does not end there. Accounting is the language of business; therefore, it opens other exciting opportunities in the industry and even outside.

If you are a student and you are still not fully convinced to take up an accounting course after reading “Why you should pursue an Accounting Degree” or maybe you are already an accountant or auditor, but you want to have a change of work, read on.

Accounting is not a dying profession. It is merely adapting to the changes brought about by new technology and updated practices. There is now a shift in the accountant’s work because of the new accounting trends. So, what are some of the professions you can take? Is there a need to take another course just to shift careers? Here are some of the careers you can enter with an accounting degree.

  1. Data Analyst – Since almost everything now is automated and companies heavily rely on technology, Data Analysts are hired to sort and report these data found in the system. Big data is one of the new trends in accounting which means that there should be someone understanding all the current and past information to see “what will be” and “what should be done”. Being a data analyst gives you a say in decision-making since your findings are beneficial for the company’s endeavors.
  2. Stockbroker – If you are done with the monotonous life, being a stockbroker would probably give the thrill you are seeking as it is in a fast-paced environment. Your sales and marketing skills would be useful in the constant monitoring of stock markets, the latest financial and legal legislation, and even presentations to clients in networking events or conferences. You would definitely be out of the office for this one!
  3. Management Consultant – For those of you with extensive experience in the accounting and auditing sector, you might want to consider management consultancy. It requires analytical skills, strategic planning, and problem-solving abilities. As a management consultant, you are expected to identify and address a business issue that would result in growth and improved performance. Some employers or clients prefer those with relevant experience, but new graduates may immediately choose the profession and start their training to eventually become management consultants.
  4. Forensic Accountant – This profession may be directly associated with accounting, but it is not as talked about. Instead of just focusing on accounting and auditing documents, forensic accounting also employs investigative skills. This means that the audits performed can actually take you to court to testify in proceedings! You will be involved with law enforcement as you present evidence and financial findings of where missing or misused money is and how to recover it.
  5. System Designers – With all the new accounting software systems being produced, accountants play a significant role in designing these. Not all accountants may have the technical skills of IT professionals, but accountants are the ones tasked with the conceptual system. In some cases, some accountants are now delving deeper into Software Development and Information Technology just to improve their technical skills and make the physical system themselves.
  6.

These are just some of the careers you can take aside from being an accountant or an auditor with an accounting degree. As you go along with your experience, you will realize what you want and what you are good at. Remember to consider those when choosing your path.
